What the u-bolt does on a fire line, and how to specify it.
A U-bolt is the simplest support in the box, and it does three things: it supports the pipe, anchors it in place, and guides it so it moves the way the design expects. On a fire line you will meet it at support points, at valves, and wherever the pipe needs to be held rather than just hung.
The U has to clear the outside diameter of the pipe with room to spare, so the legs are not bent around a tight fit. State the size, and the number of matching nuts and spacers, so the load is spread evenly across the bolt legs. A U-bolt that is torqued hard on too few nuts concentrates the load and is the fast way to damage a clamp point.
Carbon steel, electro-galvanized, the same spec as the rest of the hanger line. It is the unmarked, general-support item in the range, so specify the fire-rated hangers and clamps separately where the system calls for the 343 degree C rating.
Send the line with the rest of the assembly rather than as a single part. State the size against the pipe outside diameter it serves, the finish, and the count. Pair it with the matching threaded rod, nuts, washers and anchors from the same range, and flag whether the design needs the fire-rated, FM/UL marked version, so the support arrives with the pipe instead of chasing it later.
The U-bolt is the general support item and is not the marked fire-rated hanger. Use the FM/UL marked hangers and clamps where the design requires the 343 degree C rating.
